6 Reasons to Go Solar
People may debate whether the planet needs saving but the fact that solar will save you money is beyond question. Here are 6 reasons to go solar:
1. Great return on your investment
Solar panels aren’t an expense – they’re one of the best ways to invest. The average American homeowner pays off their solar panel system in ten years and sees an ROI of 20 percent or more.
2. Utility rates are climbing every year
In the past ten years, residential electricity prices have gone up by an average of three percent annually. By investing in a solar energy system now, you can fix your electricity rate and protect against unpredictable increases in electricity costs. Whether you’re a homeowner, business, or nonprofit, electricity costs can make up a large portion of your monthly expenses. With a solar panel system, you’ll generate free power for your system’s entire 30+ year lifecycle. Even if you don’t produce 100 percent of the energy you consume, solar will reduce your utility bills and you’ll still save a lot of money.
3. Increases property value
Solar increases property value. For example: a 5 kilowatt (kW) solar system (the national average) will offer 5,000 watts of power. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBL) says that each watt of solar adds about $3 to a home’s value in Florida. Thus, a home with solar should sell for about ($3 x 5,000W =) $15,000.
4. Tax incentives from the government
Solar system owners are eligible for the Federal Investment Tax Credit, or ITC if you buy your own Florida solar panels. The tax credit amounts to 30% of the cost of purchasing your solar system. However, ITC credits will begin stepping down from 30% at the end of 2019. The tax credit for solar systems in service after 12/31/19 will drop to 26%. After 12/31/20, it’ll drop even further to 22%, and by 2022 the residential credit will drop to 0% (10% for commercial). That’s why the time to go solar is now. But not to worry—we can help you explore the solar incentives available to you.
5. Solar is clean and renewable
Did you know that the average household emits nearly 20 metric tons of carbon pollution each year? Buildings alone account for nearly 35 percent of carbon emission in the US. Solar is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. A typical residential solar panel system will eliminate three to four tons of carbon emissions each year—the equivalent of planting over 100 trees annually.
6. Can be set up to power your home even if the grid is down after a storm
Not only can you eliminate your energy bill, but you can get paid by the utility company. This means, if at any point your solar power system needs maintenance or accrues damage from a natural disaster, you can use the credit towards utility grid energy use. A solar battery backup also provides power to your home in the event of a power outage.
