What Is Solar Thermal Power?
Switching to solar energy in your home reduces your impact on the environment. It also saves you money. However, electricity is just one form of energy that can be made from the power of the Sun. Some solar technology uses the heat from the Sun rather than the light. These two types of energy are called solar electrical (or photovoltaic) and solar thermal. Having both types of systems in your home can help you use your household utilities more efficiently. But what’s the difference between these two kinds of solar power?
Different Types of Solar Power
Solar energy comes in two forms - electric and thermal. When people talk about solar panels and use terms like “photovoltaic,” they’re referring to solar electrical power. This kind of energy can be used to produce electricity and power all sorts of things including a home. Some people store this power in a backup battery in case of power outages.
What is Solar Thermal Power?
Solar thermal power works a little differently. While still using the power of the sun, thermal energy is essential just heat and is used for other applications. These include everything from heating your home’s water or heating a swimming pool, to even assisting air conditioners run more efficiently
For example, our thermal water heating technology works by running your water through the solar panels. Then, the panels transfer heat to the water as it travels back to the home or pool. Solar-assisted A/C works differently by using ThermX ™ panels fitted to an A/C unit. Heat is absorbed from the Sun, taking the load of energy production off the compressor.
The Benefits of Solar Thermal Power
Should you use solar thermal tech? The benefits are similar to using electricity made from solar energy. For instance, it’s better for the environment and will save you money. Let’s think about our example of the A/C unit powered by ThermX ™ panels. The compressor in any A/C unit is not very efficient on electricity alone. However, ThermX ™ panels help the compressor run on less electricity by using thermal power. As a result, your A/C unit will use more free, renewable energy and lower utility bills. This is especially true in the summer. The hotter it is outside, the harder and better the system works.
