How Long Do Solar Panels Last?
Solar energy has very few drawbacks. It’s a renewable resource that’s good for the environment, and homeowners can save money on their utility bills when they switch to solar power. However, solar panel lifespan is one thing to consider. Solar panels slowly lose efficiency over time. This is caused by a variety of things, from sun exposure to inclement weather. When homeowners pick solar power products for their home, they should take how long solar panels last into consideration.
Between all the different products on the solar panel market, most solar panels last about 20 years on average. Currently, the best solar panels last more than 25. SunPower Solar, for example, has a 25-year warranty and can “last” 25 to 30 years. Does this mean they stop producing power after 30 years? Absolutely not. Rather, the panels’ efficiency has significantly reduced to the point the panels themselves need part replacements and repairs.
How much power solar panels lose each year is called the “degradation rate.” On average, solar panels lose 0.8 percent of their output each year. However, again, premium manufacturers like SunPower have managed to whittle this number down to 0.3 percent per year. What does this mean? If homeowners install SunPower solar panels on their roof, after 1 year, their panels will drop to 99.7 percent of their original output. Even after the 25-year warranty expires, SunPower panels will still function at about 92.5 percent.
Increasing Solar Panel Lifespan
Unlike many other technologies and products covered by warranties, solar panels require little upkeep. They have few moving parts, which means regular maintenance is unnecessary. However, what warranties do cover is defects and environmental damages. Getting regular inspections from your solar panel provider helps catch damages before they can impact solar panel efficiency. Some things that can affect solar panel performance includes exposed wires or debris, such as fallen branches or bird nests. In addition, loose racking or microinverters that need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years can also impact solar panel lifespan.
